During my TraCe fellowship, I will examine the ethics and politics of heat stress risks arising from global heating. To do so, I will draw from theories of thermal inequity, thermal justice, climate justice and thermal violence, as well as loss and damage. My research will explore how heat stress and its impacts – such as heat-related illness, morbidity and mortality – amount to forms of political violence. Finally, it will critique the implicit politics of responsibilisation in the contemporary climate adaptation discourse, that “all heat deaths are preventable.”
