My research examines how the involvement of external actors transforms intrastate conflicts. Data on the development of intrastate violence, particularly since the early 2010s, clearly show: External actors increasingly internationalize intrastate conflicts through intervention. I am interested in identifying the patterns that emerge in this transformation and exploring how this trend can be described and explained. At TraCe, I investigate different forms of external support in civil wars and disaggregate the trend towards internationalization. The goal is to develop a network perspective that can grasp and explain the internationalization of intrastate conflicts as a macrotrend.
