2nd Edition of Information Technology for Peace and Security released

Edited by Christian Reuter and with contributions from Laura Guntrum and Stefka Schmid

The second edition of “Information Technology for Peace and Security – IT Applications and Infrastructures in Conflicts, Crises, War, and Peace” has been officially released, five years after its debut in 2019. This updated and expanded textbook, edited by TraCe member Christian Reuter and the team of PEASEC (among others TraCers Laura Guntrum and Stefka Schmid), explores the transformative impact of technological advancements—particularly in information technology (IT) and artificial intelligence (AI)—on peace and security. Building on its foundational introduction to peace, conflict, and security research, the book highlights perspectives from natural sciences, engineering, and computer science. Core topics include cyber conflicts, cyber arms control, cyber attribution, the role of AI, and the significance of ICT infrastructures in crisis and peace management.

The second edition responds to current global events, providing fresh insights into key political and security developments such as Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and the 2023 Israel-Hamas conflict. It discusses the dual role of ICTs and social media in conflict zones—facilitating coordination for those fleeing violence while also enabling disinformation campaigns during crises and elections worldwide. With contributions from 31 experts spanning 14 universities and research institutions, this book underscores the importance of interdisciplinary research in technical peace and security studies. It serves as a vital resource for understanding and addressing the challenges posed by rapid technological progress in global peace and conflict contexts.

The book ist availabe as an e-book and as a print version.
