How do norms and institutions manifest colonial and postcolonial as well as (post)authoritarian legacies of violence and dictatorships until today? How are these violent legacies evidenced in the contestation of norm development concerning access to justice – particularly for marginalized persons along racialized as well as gendered aspects of identity?
As justice for (colonial) violence can take different forms such as demands for recognition for past atrocities or redistribution claims, the panel “Seeking Truth, Justice, and Reparations after (Colonial) Violence: Postcolonial and Feminist Accounts in and from the Global South”, chaired by Dr Mariel Reiss, aims to explore the complex and multifaceted dynamics of norms and institutions from a postcolonial as well as a feminist perspective. The panel takes place on September 8, 2023 from 11:15-13:00 as part of this year’s Pan-European Conference on International Relations.
The different contributions to the panel by Dr Kaya de Wollf and Jephta Nguherimo (Founder of the OvaHerero People's Memorial and Reconstruction Foundation), Lina Schneider, Dr Mariel Reiss and Álvaro Okura de Almeida unpack the relationship between justice and truth commissions and emphasize the role of media and institutions to increase access to justice in highly contested areas. Prof. Dr Susanne Buckley-Zistel discusses the contributions.
The 16th Pan-European Conference on International Relations (Pec23) is organized by the European International Studies Association (EISA) and takes place from September, 5-9 2023 at the University of Potsdam. Numerous scholars gather to explore visions of a new normal from empirical, political or theoretical perspectives. More information on the Workshop and Program can be found here.
